2010 spurs South Africa’s infrastructure overhaul

The South Africa economy is currently experiencing the longest sustained upswing in the history. Gross domestic product per capital growth, which was less than 1% a year between 1994 and 2003, accelerated to 5,1% in 2005. Although this has been magnificent for the country, it has placed a considerable amount of strain on South Africa’s infrastructure.

To this extent, although good by international standards, SA infrastructure is battling to meet the current demands placed on it, especially now that they are to host the world’s largest soccer event, the FIFA World Cup.

In order to meet future demand, major investments have to be made and Government has announced a massive R415 billion infrastructure program.

The investments needed to host the tournament provide an opportunity for South Africa to:

  • develop the necessary infrastructure for long-term sustainability,
  • accelerate economic growth,
  • grow job creation and
  • reduce poverty.

This tournament is not merely an event; it is an opportunity for sustainable development.

Construction is already well underway on five new stadiums, one major upgrade and four minor upgrades. A number of smaller stadiums are being upgraded for use as training grounds.

The FIFA World Cup has also provided a massive incentive to fast-track much needed public transport projects. The focus is on bus rapid transport system, improved rail facilities, the integration of existing transport services, public transport lanes and on pedestrian and non-motorized transport facilities.

Public private partnership will be key to South African success.

Cape Town Places

It is not secret for us that Cape Town will host matches of the 2010 World Cup. The name of the stadium where matches will be hosted is “Green Point stadium”. I found very good photo where you can see stadium and beautiful background

That’s how stadium will look in future, and I found photo where Green Point Stadium was in the first phase.

That place is called Devil’s Finger.
